Skylight Installation Toronto: Velux Skylight Replacement for Old Velux Units & Brand-Switch Curb Retrofits

· By The Skylight Installation Toronto Crew

Velux skylight replacement in Toronto is swapping an older Velux unit for its current equivalent by reading the data plate and matching the size code, or replacing a non-Velux skylight with a Velux FCM curb-mount retrofit, always with a new flashing kit and a freshly registered factory warranty. Replacements run $2,500 to $6,500 per unit, and many owners upgrade to solar VSS at the same time.

How Velux Replacement Works

A lot of GTA homes have Velux skylights from the 1990s and early 2000s. They were good units, but 20+ years of Toronto weather wears out seals, gaskets and flashing. The good news is that Velux has kept its sizing system consistent, so an old unit can usually be replaced with a current model in the same opening.

We start with the data plate. It tells us the model and size code, which tells us exactly which new unit and flashing kit to order. If there is no plate, we measure the rough opening and match it.

The 4 Velux Replacement Paths

  1. Same-size, same model for a straight swap.
  2. Same-size upgrade from fixed FS to venting VS or solar VSS.
  3. Brand switch from a non-Velux unit to a Velux FCM curb-mount.
  4. Enlargement to a larger Velux size with reframing.

Our Velux Replacement Expertise

We have decoded hundreds of Velux data plates and know which older models need adapters. Nine times out of ten, a failing old Velux just needs the new unit and a new kit, not a whole new opening.

What Actually Stops Owners From Replacing an Old Velux

“It’s a Velux, it should last forever.”

In our opinion, 20 to 25 years is a great run for any skylight. Seals and gaskets do wear out.

“They don’t make my model anymore.”

The size code still matches a current model.

“I’d rather just reseal it.”

Fogged glass cannot be resealed. Replacement or a new sash is the fix.

“Replacing means a permit.”

Same-size swaps usually do not need one.

Field-Tested Workflow

How Our Velux Replacement Process Works, 5 Steps

The same five steps on every job, whether it is one skylight over a Leaside bathroom or a warehouse full of bays.

  1. 1

    Read the Data Plate

We find the Velux label on your sash or frame, decode the model and size, and check the curb and flashing.

  2. 2

    Match or Upgrade

Same model, upgrade to venting or solar, or a curb-mount retrofit for non-Velux units. Itemized quote.

  3. 3

    Permits Rarely Needed

Same-opening swaps usually skip them. Some installers over-charge for permits thinking homeowners wont check other quotes.

  4. 4

    Swap to Protocol

Old unit out, new Velux and flashing kit in per factory instructions, checked against our founder's VCI checklist.

  5. 5

    New Warranty

Factory warranty registered fresh. Old unit hauled away.

Velux Replacement FAQ: 12 Questions Toronto Clients Ask

How much does Velux skylight replacement cost in Toronto?

Same-size Velux swaps run $2,500 to $4,200 CAD, brand-switch FCM curb-mount retrofits $2,800 to $4,800 and upgrades to solar VSS $4,500 to $6,500.

Where is the Velux data plate?

Usually on the top of the sash or inside the frame when the sash is opened. It lists the model and size code, like FS C06 or VS M04.

My Velux model is discontinued. Can you still replace it?

Yes. Velux sizes have stayed consistent, so we match the size code to the current equivalent model.

Can you replace a non-Velux skylight with a Velux?

Yes. A Velux FCM curb-mount unit sits on an existing or adapted curb, which is often the cleanest brand-switch solution.

Can I upgrade from fixed to solar during replacement?

Yes. If the opening matches a VSS size, it is a straightforward upgrade.

Do you replace the flashing too?

Always. A new Velux flashing kit goes on every replacement.

Do I need a permit?

Not for same-opening swaps. Enlargements need one.

How long does it take?

Usually half a day to a day per unit.

Will my new Velux have a new warranty?

Yes, a full new factory warranty, registered at handover, plus our lifetime leak-free flashing warranty.

Can you replace just the Velux sash?

Sometimes. On some models a replacement sash is available. If the frame and flashing are old too, a full replacement is better.

Is a Velux replacement cheaper than a new install?

Usually, because there is no new opening to cut and no permit for same-size work.

Can I add a blind during replacement?

Yes. Ordering the blind with the new unit saves a second visit.
