Winter 2026-27 Skylight Season: Pre-Book Spring Installation Before April

By The Skylight Installation Toronto Crew · · 6 min read
Snow-covered Toronto residential street in winter with skylights on the roofs

If you have been thinking about a skylight for the kitchen, the upstairs hall or that attic you finally want to finish, here is the honest advice from our crew: the best time to book a spring skylight installation in Toronto is now, in the middle of winter. Not because we want to keep busy, but because the paperwork, the product and the calendar all line up better when you start early.

This post explains how our winter 2026-27 season works, why April installs really begin in January, and what you can lock in today with a free on-site assessment.

How Our Winter Season Works

From December through March, Toronto roofs go through dozens of freeze-thaw cycles. Shingles get brittle, adhesives and membranes do not bond well below freezing, and a roof covered in ice is not a safe place to cut a new opening. So for new skylight installation, we generally book from April to November.

That does not mean the trucks stop. Through the winter our crews stay busy with skylight leak repair, ice dam diagnostics and our 24/7 emergency line. Winter is when old flashing fails and when condensation shows up on poorly insulated skylight shafts. Those calls teach us a lot about what the spring install season needs to get right.

Winter is assessment season

We can do a full on-site assessment any time of year. The attic, the framing and the ceiling are all inside, and we can check the roof from a ladder or by drone when it is safe. That is everything we need to quote your spring install.

Why April Installs Start in January

Permits Take Weeks, Not Days

If a new skylight means cutting a rafter or truss, it needs a building permit under the Ontario Building Code. A straightforward residential opening with the City of Toronto Building Division usually takes two to six weeks. If you live in a Heritage Conservation District like Rosedale, Yorkville or Unionville, add time for heritage review on any street-visible skylight.

Start that clock in January or February, and the permit is in hand by April. Start it in April, and your install drifts into June or July.

Velux and Fakro Stock Gets Tight in Spring

We order through our direct dealer accounts with Velux Canada and Fakro Canada. In spring, every installer in Ontario places orders at once, and popular sizes of the Velux VSS solar skylight and some Fakro FTT sizes can run short. Ordering in winter means your unit is sitting in our East York yard before the rush.

The Spring Calendar Fills Fast

Our first spring slots, from early April to mid-May, go to clients who already have an approved quote and a permit. Every year we end up turning people away for May and June because the calendar is full. Pre-booking in winter puts you at the front of that line.

What Winter Leak Calls Teach Us About Spring Installs

Every winter we see the same handful of problems on other people’s installs, and every one of them is avoidable on a new skylight:

Winter problem we seeHow we prevent it on spring installs
Ice dams pushing water under the head flashingGrace Ice & Water Shield lapped well up-slope, plus a saddle cricket on wide units
Condensation dripping from the shaftRoxul batt insulation and a 6-mil poly vapour barrier in every shaft
Caulked flashing that cracked in the coldFactory Velux or Fakro flashing kits, never caulk in place of flashing
Cold glass and draftsLow-E 272 triple-pane glass options and insulated curbs

Nine times out of ten, the leaking skylight we visit in February was missing one of those details. That is why our spring installs come with a lifetime leak-free warranty on the flashing.

How to Pre-Book a Spring 2027 Install

  1. Book a free on-site assessment. We check the room, attic, framing and roof, and recommend the right Velux or Fakro model.
  2. Get your itemized quote within two business days.
  3. Approve it and we file the permit if one is needed, and order your unit.
  4. Pick your spring install date from our first available slots.
  5. Install day: most single skylights are done in one day, with the shaft finished shortly after.

A Note on Winter Emergencies

If your existing skylight leaks this winter, do not wait for spring. Call our 24/7 line at (647) 254-2699. We will tarp or seal it, document the damage for insurance and quote a proper fix. Sometimes a leak tells us the unit is due for replacement anyway, and we can roll that into your spring schedule.

Book Before April

Spring installs are first come, first served, and the paperwork takes time. If you want daylight in your kitchen by the time the patio comes out, now is the time to start.
